François Boucher
A delicate eighteenth-century etching by François Boucher, depicting a figure in exoticised attire as part of a series after Antoine Watteau.
This etching, executed by François Boucher, forms part of a series of prints reproducing the drawings of Antoine Watteau. The work depicts a figure in a costume inspired by European interpretations of East Asian attire, a style known as Chinoiserie. Boucher, who was a master of the Rococo aesthetic, captures the subject seated in a simplified, exoticised environment. A palm tree stands to the left, while a hat and a staff lie on the ground beside the figure. The composition relies on delicate, precise lines to define the folds of the fabric and the soft features of the woman. During the eighteenth century, European artists frequently engaged with themes of the Orient through a lens of fantasy and decorative art. This print reflects that period of fascination with distant cultures, where the visual language was often filtered through imagination rather than direct observation. The inscription at the bottom, 'Femme de MATSMAY a la terre d'Ieco', refers to Matsumae in Hokkaido, Japan, though the visual representation remains firmly rooted in the stylistic conventions of the French court. The etching technique allows for a lightness of touch, characteristic of Boucher's early career when he worked extensively on the 'Figures de différents caractères' project. The work provides a clear example of how European printmakers adapted the sketches of their predecessors to satisfy the public appetite for exotic subjects during the Enlightenment era.
