A sombre, atmospheric study of a woman at work, created by Vincent van Gogh during his early Dutch period in 1885.
This work, created in 1885 during the artist's period in Nuenen, captures a quiet, domestic scene. Van Gogh focuses on the daily labour of a peasant woman, a subject that occupied much of his attention during these years. The composition is dominated by the silhouette of the figure, positioned against the light of a window. This backlighting creates a strong contrast, reducing the woman to a dark form while the window panes provide a grid of pale light.
The artist employs heavy, expressive strokes of charcoal and chalk to define the interior space. The hanging lamp above the window and the simple furniture suggest a modest, rural setting. Van Gogh uses a limited, sombre palette, which was typical of his early Dutch period. He was interested in the dignity of manual work and the lives of the rural poor. The drawing demonstrates his early mastery of light and shadow, using the medium to convey a sense of atmosphere rather than precise detail.
Unlike his later, more colourful works, this piece relies on tonal variation to build form. The texture of the paper remains visible, adding to the raw, unpolished quality of the sketch. It is a study of human activity within a confined space, showing the artist's ability to find visual interest in the mundane tasks of everyday life. The work reflects his empathy for his subjects and his desire to depict the reality of their existence without idealisation. By focusing on the silhouette, he directs the viewer's attention to the posture and the action of the figure, creating a sense of stillness and concentration.
