A delicate watercolour and ink study of a snow-covered Dutch farmstead, capturing the quiet atmosphere of a winter day.
Jacob van Strij, a painter from Dordrecht, produced this winter scene using a combination of ink and watercolour. The composition reflects the Dutch tradition of winter imagery, which often focused on the quiet, frozen conditions of the countryside. A farmhouse with a snow-covered roof occupies the left side of the frame, providing a sense of domestic scale against the open, icy terrain. The trees, rendered with delicate, bare branches, suggest the stillness of the season.
Van Strij was heavily influenced by the masters of the Dutch Golden Age, particularly Aelbert Cuyp. His work often features similar attention to atmospheric light and rural life. In this piece, the artist uses a restrained palette to convey the cold, crisp air of a winter day. The figures in the foreground provide a human element, grounding the scene in daily activity despite the harsh environment. The use of ink for the outlines and structural elements, paired with light washes of colour, is characteristic of his approach to paper-based works.
The scene captures a moment of rural life in the Netherlands during the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. The frozen waterway on the right leads the eye into the distance, creating a sense of depth that is typical of Dutch topographical studies. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, opting instead for a clear, observational style that documents the architecture and natural features of the region. This print offers a view into the historical aesthetic of the period, where the focus remained on the interplay between human structures and the natural world.
