This engraving, titled Hyems (Winter), is a work by the Flemish printmaker Aegidius Sadeler (II). Produced during his tenure in Prague, where he served as court engraver to Emperor Rudolf II, the print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the Sadeler family. The composition is based on a design by Pieter Stevens, a painter known for his detailed topographical and seasonal depictions.

The scene captures the activities of a cold season. In the foreground, figures are occupied with the physical labour of gathering and sawing wood, providing a contrast to the leisure activities occurring on the frozen river. The middle ground features a variety of skaters and pedestrians navigating the ice, while the background reveals a townscape with a bridge and architectural structures. The bare, skeletal trees frame the left side of the image, their branches rendered with fine, rhythmic lines that suggest the starkness of winter.

Sadeler employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the frozen water, the rough bark of the trees, and the heavy garments of the figures. The sky is filled with swirling clouds, adding a sense of atmospheric movement to the otherwise static, frigid environment. The inclusion of small birds in the upper right corner provides a subtle detail that draws the eye across the expanse of the composition. This work reflects the interest in seasonal cycles and daily life that occupied many artists in the Low Countries during the early seventeenth century.
