This work depicts the Yōryū Kannon, or Willow-branch Kannon, a manifestation of the bodhisattva of compassion. Gakuō Zōkyū, an artist active during the Muromachi period, employs the suiboku-ga technique, which relies on the expressive potential of ink wash on paper. The figure of Kannon stands centrally, draped in flowing robes that suggest movement and grace. The artist uses calligraphic brushwork to define the contours of the deity, while softer, diluted ink washes create the atmospheric background.

Behind the figure, a large, pale circle represents the moon, providing a luminous backdrop that contrasts with the darker, ink-heavy bamboo stalks.
