A detailed 1540 engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever portraying William V, Duke of Julich, Cleve and Berg, showcasing the precision of Northern Renaissance printmaking.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1540, depicts William V, Duke of Julich, Cleve and Berg. Aldegrever, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was heavily influenced by the technical precision of Albrecht Dürer. This portrait demonstrates the meticulous line work characteristic of his output, particularly in the rendering of the Duke's fur-lined mantle and the delicate textures of his doublet.
The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century court portraiture. The Duke is presented in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. A coat of arms is positioned in the upper right corner, reinforcing his status and lineage. The inclusion of a Latin inscription at the base of the print provides historical context, identifying the subject and the artist, while also offering a laudatory summary of the Duke's character and virtues. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates a sense of volume and depth, despite the relatively shallow pictorial space.
Aldegrever was based in Soest, Westphalia, and his work often reflects the stylistic developments of the German Renaissance. This print is a fine example of the period's interest in combining heraldic symbolism with humanistic portraiture. The attention to detail, from the rings on the Duke's fingers to the intricate embroidery on his sleeves, reflects the high level of craftsmanship expected in sixteenth-century printmaking. The work remains a significant record of the political and social hierarchy of the Holy Roman Empire during the mid-sixteenth century.
