A 1896 political lithograph by Marius Bauer depicting Dutch politician Willem Treub as Odysseus navigating between Scylla and Charybdis.
This lithograph by Marius Bauer, published in the Dutch weekly 'De Kroniek' on 16 February 1896, employs classical mythology to comment on contemporary political affairs. The composition depicts the Dutch politician Willem Treub in the role of Odysseus, navigating his small boat between the mythical sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis. Bauer uses these figures to represent the difficult political choices facing Treub during his candidacy for the board of the 'Maatschappij tot Nut van het Algemeen'.
Bauer, known primarily for his etchings and paintings of Orientalist subjects, demonstrates his technical facility with line and shadow in this work. The monsters are rendered with swirling, atmospheric strokes that evoke a sense of impending danger, contrasting with the determined posture of the central figure. The print serves as a visual metaphor for the precarious nature of political navigation, where one must steer a course between opposing threats. The inclusion of text below the image provides specific context regarding the political climate of the 1890s, framing the mythological scene within the reality of Dutch parliamentary life.
The print is executed with a focus on expressive line work rather than precise anatomical detail, allowing the monstrous forms to appear as manifestations of political pressure. The use of light and dark creates a dramatic tension, typical of the Symbolist tendencies present in Bauer's graphic output during this period. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of fine art and journalism at the end of the nineteenth century, where artists were frequently employed to provide visual commentary on the shifting alliances and public debates of the day.
