Itō Jakuchū, a merchant-turned-painter from Kyoto, produced this work during the mid-Edo period. The composition features a gnarled plum tree, its branches laden with white blossoms, set against a muted, atmospheric background. A pale, circular moon emerges from the upper right, providing a soft illumination that contrasts with the dark, textured bark of the tree. The artist employs a precise technique, capturing the delicate nature of the petals while maintaining the structural integrity of the heavy, twisting branches.
Jakuchū is known for his individualistic approach to traditional subjects. Unlike many of his contemporaries who adhered strictly to established schools, he observed nature with a high degree of scrutiny. This work demonstrates his ability to balance decorative elements with a sense of natural observation. The ink wash provides depth, allowing the white blossoms to appear as if they are catching the moonlight. The vertical format of the hanging scroll dictates the flow of the branches, which move across the silk surface in a rhythmic, organic manner.
This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the plum blossom served as a symbol of resilience and the arrival of spring.
