A serene Neo-Impressionist study by Théo van Rysselberghe, capturing a woman arranging white peonies in a domestic interior.
Théo van Rysselberghe, a central figure in the Belgian Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work during his later period. The composition depicts a woman in a domestic setting, engaged in the arrangement of a large bouquet of white peonies. The artist employs a technique characterised by short, rhythmic brushstrokes, a method he adopted after his initial experiments with strict pointillism. This approach allows for a softer, more fluid representation of light and form.
The colour palette is dominated by cool tones, with the deep blue of the ceramic vase and the woman's sash providing a contrast to the creamy white of the flowers. The light, filtering through a window, creates a gentle atmosphere, typical of the artist's interest in capturing transient domestic moments. The reflection on the polished surface of the table adds a sense of depth to the scene, grounding the figures within the space.
Van Rysselberghe was a founding member of Les XX, a group that brought together avant-garde artists in Brussels. His work often bridged the gap between the scientific application of colour theory and a more lyrical, personal expression. In this piece, the focus remains on the quiet interaction between the subject and the floral display. The artist's monogram, visible on the right side of the canvas, confirms his authorship of this refined study of light and texture. The painting demonstrates his ability to balance the decorative qualities of the floral arrangement with the human element of the portrait, resulting in a harmonious composition that avoids excessive detail while maintaining a clear, observational quality.
