A delicate ink and light colour painting of White Crane Mountain by the Qing Dynasty artist Ye Xin, featuring traditional calligraphy.
This work by Ye Xin, a painter active during the early Qing Dynasty, represents the shan shui tradition of mountain and water painting. The composition depicts White Crane Mountain, rendered with delicate ink washes and subtle applications of colour. Ye Xin was associated with the Nanjing school, a group of artists known for their individualistic approaches to traditional subjects. This specific leaf was created for the collector and official Zhou Lianggong, who commissioned several albums from contemporary artists to document scenic sites.
The visual structure relies on the interplay between solid rock formations and negative space. The mountain peaks rise from the lower left, guiding the eye toward the architectural structures nestled upon the slopes. The artist employs fine, controlled brushwork to define the contours of the terrain and the sparse vegetation. The inclusion of calligraphy on the right side of the sheet balances the visual weight of the mountain, a common practice in Chinese album leaves where text and image function as a unified whole. The muted palette, dominated by sepia tones and soft greys, reflects the restrained aesthetic favoured by literati painters of the period.
Ye Xin often focused on the specific topography of the Jiangnan region. His work demonstrates a technical proficiency in ink manipulation, allowing for subtle gradations that suggest atmospheric depth without relying on Western perspective. The presence of red seals indicates the history of ownership and appreciation by subsequent collectors. This print captures the quietude of the original, preserving the texture of the paper and the fluidity of the ink strokes. It offers a view into the scholarly culture of the seventeenth century, where the act of painting was closely linked to travel, poetry, and the exchange of ideas among the intellectual elite.
