Description

A traditional Bunjinga hanging scroll by Tanomura Chokunyū, featuring a mountainous scene with crimson trees and mist.

Tanomura Chokunyū was a prominent figure in the Bunjinga tradition, a style of Japanese painting that drew inspiration from Chinese literati art. This vertical hanging scroll demonstrates his mastery of the genre, presenting a mountainous terrain enveloped in mist and foliage. The composition follows the traditional vertical format, guiding the viewer from the foreground, where small figures inhabit a secluded dwelling, up through the craggy peaks and winding paths that disappear into the clouds.

The colour palette relies on muted earth tones, punctuated by the deliberate application of crimson for the autumn trees. These red accents provide a visual rhythm against the soft greens of the mountains and the pale, negative space representing the clouds. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the disciplined training required of a Bunjinga practitioner. Each stroke serves to define the texture of the rock faces or the delicate needles of the pine trees.

Chokunyū, who was the adopted son of the famous painter Tanomura Chikuden, maintained the intellectual rigour associated with the literati school throughout his career. His work often reflects a deep engagement with nature, not merely as a subject, but as a space for contemplation. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper section of the scroll is typical of the period, integrating text and image to create a unified work of art. This piece captures the quiet atmosphere of a mountain retreat, where the human presence is small compared to the scale of the natural world. The balance between the solid forms of the mountains and the ethereal quality of the clouds creates a sense of harmony, a core objective within this artistic tradition.
