A striking example of Georgian Naïve art, this piece depicts a mother bear and her cubs in a dark, stylised cornfield, rendered with the artist's signature directness.
Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this work on oilcloth, a material he frequently utilised due to its affordability and availability in the taverns of Tiflis. The composition features a mother bear and her two cubs positioned within a dark, stylised cornfield. The stark contrast between the pale, luminous forms of the bears and the deep, murky background is a hallmark of Pirosmani's aesthetic. He often painted on black oilcloth, leaving sections of the original surface exposed to create shadows and depth without the need for complex layering.
The bears are rendered with a direct, simplified anatomy that prioritises character over anatomical precision. Their expressions possess a quiet, watchful quality. The surrounding environment, including the corn stalks and floating, orb-like fruits, is depicted with a flat, decorative sensibility that removes the scene from a specific temporal or geographical reality. This approach creates a dreamlike atmosphere, characteristic of the artist's broader body of work, which often focused on animals, feast scenes, and historical figures of Georgia.
Pirosmani lived a transient life, often trading his paintings for food or drink. His work remained largely unrecognised by the formal art establishment during his lifetime, only gaining wider attention after his death. The simplicity of his technique, combined with his unique ability to capture the essence of his subjects, has secured his position as a significant figure in the history of twentieth-century folk art. This print captures the original's muted palette and the distinct texture of the oilcloth surface, offering a clear view of the artist's deliberate, unadorned brushwork.
