A classic genre painting by Eugene de Blaas, depicting a young woman in traditional attire carrying a yoke and baskets of eggs.
Eugene de Blaas, an Italian painter of the Academic school, produced this work during the late nineteenth century. The painting depicts a young woman in traditional Venetian attire, carrying two baskets suspended from a wooden yoke across her shoulders. One basket contains a hen, while the other holds eggs, providing the narrative context for the title.
De Blaas was known for his technical precision and his focus on the daily lives of the Venetian working class. His approach to light and texture is evident in the rendering of the woman's clothing, from the soft folds of her blue skirt to the delicate lace of her bodice. The background, featuring a stone wall and a doorway, remains understated to ensure the figure remains the primary focus.
The composition is balanced, with the horizontal line of the yoke providing a stable frame for the subject. De Blaas utilised a controlled palette, allowing the muted tones of the stone and the soft colours of the woman's garments to create a sense of realism. This work reflects the artist's interest in capturing quiet, domestic moments, a common theme in his extensive body of work. His ability to convey personality through facial expression and posture is characteristic of his style, which often sought to idealise his subjects while maintaining a grounded, observational quality. The painting remains a clear example of the late Academic tradition, where technical skill and narrative clarity were held in high regard.
