Description

A satirical etching from Goya's Los Caprichos series, depicting a forced marriage with biting social commentary.

What a sacrifice! (Que sacrificio!) is plate 14 from Los Caprichos, a series of eighty prints published by Francisco Goya in 1799. This work employs etching and aquatint to critique the social customs and moral failings of late eighteenth-century Spanish society.

The composition depicts a young woman being presented for marriage to an elderly, grotesque suitor. The bride stands in the foreground, her expression one of resignation and sorrow. Behind her, a group of figures, including a leering man and a woman covering her face, observe the scene. Goya uses the aquatint process to create tonal depth, contrasting the stark white of the bride's dress against the dark, textured shadows that surround the other figures.

Goya often used these prints to explore themes of human folly, superstition, and the corruption of social institutions. In this specific image, the artist directs his gaze toward the practice of arranged marriages, where youth and beauty are traded for status or wealth. The title itself is ironic, mocking the societal expectation that such a union is a noble or necessary duty. The figures in the background are rendered with exaggerated, almost monstrous features, a common technique in Goya's work to externalise the inner moral decay of his subjects.

This print remains a significant example of Goya's ability to blend social commentary with technical mastery. The lines are precise, yet the overall atmosphere is one of unease. By stripping away the veneer of polite society, Goya exposes the transactional nature of the arrangement. The work invites the viewer to consider the human cost behind such social conventions, presented through the artist's sharp, unforgiving lens.
