A serene watercolour by David Cox depicting Westminster Abbey silhouetted against a golden sky, viewed from the south bank of the Thames.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a prominent member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours. This work depicts the London skyline from the south bank of the Thames. It captures Westminster Abbey as the dominant architectural feature before the construction of the current Palace of Westminster. The view is taken from Lambeth, looking across the water towards the north bank. The composition is divided into horizontal bands. The foreground shows the dark, reflective surface of the river with small figures in a boat. Above this, the rooftops of the city form a dark silhouette. The Abbey rises above the urban sprawl, rendered in a cool blue-grey tone that contrasts with the warm yellow of the sky. Cox uses a limited palette to suggest the atmospheric conditions of a London evening. The light is concentrated behind the Abbey, creating a halo effect that defines its Gothic towers. Cox was known for his loose, expressive brushwork. In this watercolour, he employs broad washes to establish the sky and water. Finer details are reserved for the architectural outlines and the figures in the foreground. The paper texture is visible through the thinner washes, contributing to the sense of light and air. This piece represents the transition from traditional topographical drawing to a more atmospheric, Romantic approach to the urban environment. It is a record of the city before the industrial changes of the mid-nineteenth century.
