A refined surimono woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a Western pocket watch and decorative pouch. Originally part of the Spring Rain Collection, this work features elegant calligraphy and precise detail.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print for the Spring Rain Collection (Harusame shū), a series of deluxe albums commissioned by the Katsushika poetry circle. These prints, known as surimono, were not intended for commercial sale. Instead, they were distributed privately among members of literary groups. Because they were not subject to the same budget constraints as mass-market prints, surimono often featured expensive pigments and complex printing techniques. This specific work comes from the third volume of the series, which was published during the 1840s. The subject is a Western pocket watch, an object that represented the increasing interest in foreign technology during the late Edo period. The watch is accompanied by a heavy metal chain and a decorative pouch. While the casing follows European designs, the dial is adapted for the Japanese market. It uses traditional characters to mark the hours. The surrounding text consists of kyōka, which are short, humorous poems written by the patrons who commissioned the volume. The calligraphy is integrated into the space around the objects, creating a balanced arrangement between text and image. Hiroshige employs a restrained colour palette. He uses earthy reds and muted greens. Metallic greys define the watch and chain. The composition follows the aesthetic of the Shijō school, which favoured naturalistic observation and the use of empty space. The fine lines of the watch chain and the soft textures of the fabric pouch demonstrate the technical skill of the woodblock cutters. This print provides a record of the material culture and social pastimes of the urban elite in nineteenth-century Japan. The use of metallic pigments on the watch and chain would have shimmered under candlelight, adding a tactile quality to the paper surface.
