A detailed watercolour by Kehar Singh depicting a traditional Indian weaver and a woman spinning thread, representative of the 19th-century Company School.
This work by the Indian artist Kehar Singh belongs to the Company School of painting, a style that emerged during the British colonial period. Artists of this movement often produced works for European patrons, documenting local trades, customs, and daily life in India. The composition presents a clear, observational view of two figures engaged in traditional textile production.
On the left, a male weaver sits at a simple, portable loom constructed from wooden poles. His posture is focused as he manages the warp threads. Beside him, small clay vessels and tools are placed on the ground, providing context to his craft. To the right, a woman operates a spinning wheel, her attention directed toward the thread. Both figures are rendered with a degree of naturalism that characterises the period, capturing the specific details of their attire and the mechanics of their equipment.
The background remains largely empty, a common feature in Company School studies, which prioritises the subject over environmental detail. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the structure of the loom and the features of the individuals. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones for the figures and tools, with subtle blue and red accents in the clothing. This piece functions as a visual record of artisanal practices in the mid-19th century. It avoids idealisation, offering instead a direct representation of the labour involved in spinning and weaving. The inclusion of Persian script at the top identifies the artist and the subject matter, confirming the work's origin within a tradition of documentary art that bridged local techniques with the interests of a foreign audience.
