A serene Symbolist painting by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, depicting traditional Lithuanian wayside shrines in a quiet, golden-hued rural setting.
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a central figure in Lithuanian art, produced this work during a period of intense focus on his national heritage. The painting depicts two traditional Lithuanian wayside shrines, known as stogastulpiai, set against a gentle, rolling horizon. These wooden structures, often carved with religious motifs and topped with iron crosses, were common features of the rural Zemaitija region.
In this composition, the artist employs a muted, golden-hued palette that suggests the soft light of dawn or dusk. The foreground is defined by a grassy bank dotted with small, delicate wildflowers, rendered with a light touch. The shrines themselves are depicted with a focus on their verticality and the specific, stylised carvings that characterise folk art from this part of Europe. One shrine contains a small, sheltered figure, adding a narrative element to the quiet scene.
Čiurlionis, who was also a prolific composer, often approached his visual art with a rhythmic sensibility. Here, the repetition of the vertical forms creates a sense of stillness and contemplation. The background, with its simplified, undulating fields and distant trees, is painted with a flatness that avoids traditional perspective, drawing the viewer into a dreamlike, atmospheric space. This work reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of folk tradition and personal, symbolic expression. By documenting these cultural markers, he preserved a specific aspect of the Lithuanian countryside while imbuing the scene with a sense of mystery and quietude. The work remains a clear example of his ability to synthesise observation with a highly individual, poetic vision.
