A refined Rinpa school study of stylised waves, featuring fluid indigo ink brushwork against a shimmering gold leaf background.
Nakamura Hōchū was a painter active in Kyoto during the Edo period. He is associated with the Rinpa school, a movement known for its decorative approach and use of gold and silver backgrounds. This work, executed in the format of a folding fan, displays the characteristic economy of line and stylistic abstraction found in Hōchū's oeuvre.
The composition depicts stylised waves using fluid, calligraphic brushwork in deep indigo ink. The water forms rhythmic, swirling patterns that suggest movement across the surface of the paper. The artist leaves significant negative space, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the dark, flowing lines and the metallic texture of the gold leaf applied to the upper portion of the fan. This contrast creates a sense of depth and luminosity, typical of the aesthetic preferences of the period.
Hōchū often drew inspiration from the earlier master Ogata Kōrin, yet he developed a distinct, more personal style that favoured a certain playfulness and graphic simplicity. The fan shape itself dictates the composition, with the radiating folds of the paper subtly influencing the placement of the wave motifs. The signature and seal of the artist are positioned to the right, maintaining the balance of the overall design. This piece reflects the Rinpa tradition of applying high-art techniques to functional objects, demonstrating how everyday items were elevated through careful artistic consideration. The work remains a clear example of the Japanese appreciation for natural phenomena rendered through a lens of refined, decorative art.
