A precise wildlife study by Charles Tunnicliffe, capturing waterfowl among willow branches with delicate ink lines and soft watercolour washes.
Charles Tunnicliffe, a master of British wildlife art, demonstrates his precise observational skills in this study of waterfowl. The composition focuses on a group of ducks navigating a calm, reflective body of water, framed by the overhanging branches of pussy willow. Tunnicliffe employs a disciplined approach to line, using ink to define the skeletal structure of the trees and the silhouettes of the birds, while watercolour washes provide subtle tonal variation across the surface of the water.
The artist captures the movement of the water through rhythmic, undulating lines that ripple outward from the birds. This technique creates a sense of stillness, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the wildlife and the surrounding flora. The palette remains restrained, relying on cool greys, muted browns, and the pale, soft tones of the willow catkins to establish a quiet, natural atmosphere.
Tunnicliffe spent much of his career documenting the avian life of the British Isles, particularly in his native Cheshire and later in Anglesey. His work is characterised by a lack of sentimentality, favouring anatomical accuracy and a deep understanding of animal behaviour. This piece reflects his ability to integrate biological detail with a decorative sensibility, making it a representative example of his mid-twentieth-century output. The arrangement of the branches creates a natural screen, drawing the eye through the foreground and into the middle distance where the birds congregate. This print offers a clear view of Tunnicliffe's technical proficiency, showing how he balanced the graphic quality of ink work with the fluid application of pigment to represent the textures of feathers, bark, and water.
