A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Reinier Nooms depicting the process of caulking a ship's hull in a Dutch shipyard.
This etching by Reinier Nooms, also known as Zeeman, depicts the essential maritime process of caulking a ship's hull. During the seventeenth century, Dutch shipyards relied on this method to maintain the integrity of their vessels. The scene captures a ship tilted on its side, allowing workers to access the hull. A fire burns near the waterline, producing thick plumes of smoke that dominate the composition. This smoke serves both a functional purpose, as the heat was necessary to melt the pitch used for sealing, and a stylistic one, providing a sense of atmosphere and movement against the sky.
Nooms possessed an intimate knowledge of nautical subjects, having spent time as a sailor before establishing himself as an artist. His technical proficiency is evident in the precise rendering of the rigging and the structural details of the vessel. The etching demonstrates his ability to balance the mechanical aspects of shipbuilding with the broader maritime environment. The composition is grounded by the horizontal line of the dock and the calm water, which contrasts with the verticality of the masts and the billowing smoke.
As a practitioner of the Dutch Golden Age, Nooms focused on the realities of naval life rather than idealized maritime scenes. His work provides a clear view into the labour-intensive maintenance required for the Dutch merchant and naval fleets. The fine lines of the etching allow for a high level of detail, from the small figures working near the fire to the distant ships on the horizon. This print offers an authentic perspective on the daily operations of a seventeenth-century shipyard, presented with the clarity and observational skill characteristic of Nooms's graphic output.
