A satirical 1831 lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, critiquing the political climate and complacency of the July Monarchy in France.
This lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet appeared in the French satirical journal La Caricature in 1831. The work functions as a biting political commentary on the July Monarchy, a period marked by social unrest and shifting allegiances in post-revolutionary France. Raffet, known for his technical skill in lithography, employs a sharp, observational style to critique the political theatre of the era.
The composition centres on a figure seated in a large chair, which is emblazoned with the words 'Contentement Général' (General Contentment). This serves as a satirical jab at the perceived complacency of the ruling class. The surrounding figures, dressed in period attire, engage in a tense exchange. The title, inscribed at the bottom, warns a 'buffoon' that the devil possesses more cunning than the participants themselves. This reflects the cynical atmosphere of Parisian political circles during the early 1830s.
Raffet uses fine, hatched lines to define the textures of the clothing and the weight of the furniture. The scene is staged like a theatrical performance, emphasising the performative nature of political power. By placing the figures on a raised platform, the artist draws attention to the artifice involved in maintaining public order. The print captures the specific visual language of 19th-century French satire, where subtle gestures and symbolic props convey complex political messages to an informed readership. As a historical document, the piece provides insight into the methods used by artists to navigate censorship and express dissent through the medium of the popular press. The work remains a clear example of how lithography allowed for the rapid dissemination of critical imagery during a period of significant political transition.
