A classic woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicting the historical encounter between warriors Kumagai Naozane and Taira Atsumori.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts a moment from the Genpei War, specifically the encounter between the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane and the young Taira Atsumori at the Battle of Ichinotani. Harunobu, a pioneer of the nishiki-e (brocade print) technique, uses a refined palette to capture the tension of this historical tragedy. The composition balances the standing figure of the older warrior with the kneeling youth, whose armour and posture suggest his noble status and impending fate.
Harunobu is recognised for his delicate treatment of figures, often favouring slender, graceful forms. In this work, the stylised waves in the background provide a sense of place, grounding the figures in the coastal setting of the battle. The artist employs thin, precise lines to define the intricate plates of the samurai armour and the facial features of the protagonists. The use of colour is restrained, focusing on earthy tones and muted reds, which allows the viewer to concentrate on the interaction between the two men rather than decorative excess.
As a master of the mid-Edo period, Harunobu moved away from the bold, primary colours of earlier printmakers, opting instead for a more nuanced approach. This print reflects his ability to translate classical literary and historical themes into the accessible format of the woodblock print. The scene captures the quiet before the final act of the encounter, a moment of recognition and sorrow that has been a subject of Japanese literature for centuries. The print remains a clear example of the technical precision and aesthetic sensibility that defined Harunobu's career, demonstrating his skill in balancing narrative weight with visual harmony.
