A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Jean Bernard featuring a royal fleur-de-lys crest and decorative scrollwork, originally used as a commercial trade label.
This etching by Jean Bernard presents a formal heraldic composition centred on the fleur-de-lys, the traditional emblem of the French monarchy. The central oval shield displays three fleur-de-lys, surmounted by a royal crown and surrounded by elaborate acanthus-leaf scrollwork. The inclusion of the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit at the base indicates a connection to French royal authority. The inscription, Tabac a la Violette, suggests this print functioned as a trade label or a decorative advertisement for a luxury goods merchant, a common practice for engravers of the period who produced commercial ephemera alongside fine art.
Bernard employs a precise etching technique to define the textures of the metallic crown, the soft curves of the foliage, and the radiating light beams behind the shield. The composition follows the conventions of late eighteenth-century French engraving, where balance and symmetry govern the arrangement of decorative elements. The line work is controlled, allowing for clear legibility of the heraldic symbols while maintaining a sense of ornamental grace. The paper tone and the crispness of the impression reflect the high standards of print production during this era. This work provides a glimpse into the intersection of heraldic tradition and the commercial culture of the period, where high-status imagery was utilised to market specific products to an affluent clientele.
