This ink painting on silk, attributed to the Japanese artist Eison, belongs to the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. The composition features two wagtails perched upon a rocky outcrop, positioned near a cluster of narcissus blooms. The artist employs a monochromatic ink wash technique, utilising varying densities of ink to suggest form, texture, and depth without the use of colour.
The wagtails are rendered with precise, delicate brushwork, capturing their posture and alertness. The narcissus leaves and petals are depicted with fluid, calligraphic strokes, demonstrating the economy of line characteristic of ink painting from this period. The background remains largely unadorned, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the avian subjects and the flora.
