A poignant etching by Dutch master Jozef Israëls, depicting a woman and child gazing through a window, characteristic of the Hague School.
Jozef Israëls was a central figure of the Hague School, a group of Dutch artists known for their focus on the daily lives of fishermen and rural labourers. This etching captures a quiet, domestic moment: a woman holding a small child, both looking out through a window. The composition relies on the contrast between the interior space and the view beyond the glass.
Israëls uses the etching medium to create a range of textures, from the heavy, dark lines defining the figures to the lighter, more atmospheric hatching used for the window frame and the exterior scene. The figures are rendered in silhouette, their backs to the viewer, which directs attention toward the landscape outside. This technique creates a sense of stillness and anticipation. The artist avoids excessive detail, preferring to focus on the mood and the silhouette of the subjects.
As a leader of the Hague School, Israëls often depicted the hardships and simple joys of the working class. His work is characterised by a sombre palette and a focus on human emotion. This print is a fine example of his ability to convey narrative through minimal visual information. The lines are expressive, showing the influence of Rembrandt, whom Israëls admired. The work is printed on paper, with the ink density varying to suggest light and shadow. It remains a representative piece of late nineteenth-century Dutch printmaking, reflecting the artist's interest in the human condition and the quiet rhythms of everyday life.
