A study in ink and wash by Louis Ducros, documenting the medieval castle ruins atop Mount Eryx in Sicily.
This ink and wash study by Louis Ducros depicts the medieval castle situated atop the ruins of the ancient Temple of Venus on Mount Eryx, Sicily. Ducros, a Swiss painter known for his extensive travels through Italy and the Mediterranean, produced this work during his period of documenting classical sites and historical architecture. The drawing captures the stark, weathered stone structures against the barren landscape of the mountain summit.
The composition relies on a restrained use of grey wash to define the massing of the towers and the surrounding fortification walls. Ducros avoids excessive detail, choosing instead to focus on the geometric forms of the ruins and the interplay of light across the masonry. The inclusion of the handwritten French title at the base of the sheet confirms the location and the artist's intent to record the site for his personal collection or as a preparatory study for larger watercolour compositions.
During the late eighteenth century, artists often travelled to Sicily to document the remnants of antiquity. This work reflects the period's interest in the juxtaposition of medieval construction upon classical foundations. The drawing demonstrates the artist's ability to convey the scale and atmosphere of the site through minimal means. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its provenance as a working sketch from the artist's portfolio. It provides a clear view of the site as it appeared before modern restoration efforts altered the silhouette of the castle. The work is a direct observation, prioritising topographical accuracy and the structural integrity of the ruins over decorative embellishment.
