A portrait of the artist's wife, Nel, captured in 1912 with the expressive brushwork and bold colour palette characteristic of Belgian Fauvism.
Rik Wouters, a central figure in Belgian modernism, produced this portrait of his wife and muse, Nel, in 1912. The work captures a domestic moment, yet it transcends simple genre painting through the application of colour and light. Wouters was heavily influenced by the Fauvist movement, which is evident in his use of non-naturalistic, bold tones and visible, energetic brushwork. The figure of Nel stands before a window, her form rendered with a sense of immediacy and warmth. The red of her dress provides a strong contrast against the cooler blues and greys of the interior and the urban view beyond the glass.
Unlike the rigid academic portraits of the period, this painting prioritises the emotional resonance of the subject. The light filtering through the window illuminates her face and the white headscarf, creating a soft focus that draws the viewer into her quiet contemplation. The composition is balanced, with the vertical lines of the window frame anchoring the figure. Wouters manages to convey a sense of intimacy, reflecting his deep personal connection to his subject. The paint application is thick and tactile, demonstrating his background as a sculptor, where he often explored the interplay of light on three-dimensional surfaces. This piece remains a primary example of his ability to synthesise the observation of daily life with a modern, expressive aesthetic. The work is currently held in the collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, where it is recognised for its contribution to the development of Belgian expressionist painting.
