A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen depicting roach on a riverbank, showcasing the artist's precision in natural history illustration.
This etching by Albert Flamen depicts a group of roach, a common freshwater fish, resting upon a riverbank. Flamen, a Flemish artist active in Paris during the seventeenth century, produced numerous series of prints documenting European fauna. His work often combines scientific observation with the conventions of the Dutch and Flemish pastoral tradition. The composition places the fish in the immediate foreground, rendered with precise, delicate hatching that captures the texture of their scales and the subtle curvature of their bodies.
To the left, the base of a tree provides a shaded anchor for the scene, while tall reeds frame the right side, creating a sense of natural enclosure. In the distance, the river stretches towards a low horizon, where a small boat is visible, adding a quiet human element to the otherwise undisturbed environment. The inclusion of birds in flight across the sky introduces a sense of movement, contrasting with the stillness of the fish on the bank.
Flamen was known for his technical proficiency in etching, a medium that allowed him to achieve fine detail in his depictions of animals and their habitats. The inscription at the bottom, 'Vero. Le Veron.', identifies the species in both Latin and French, reflecting the era's interest in natural history and classification. The phrase 'Cum privilegio Regis' indicates that the print was produced under royal protection, a common practice for artists seeking to secure their copyright and status in the French court. This work is a fine example of seventeenth-century printmaking, where the study of the natural world was presented with both artistic sensitivity and a desire for accurate representation. It offers a glimpse into the period's fascination with the diversity of the animal kingdom, captured through the disciplined and patient medium of the copperplate.
