A striking woodcut by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, depicting a woman adjusting her hair before a mirror with bold, graphic lines.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his mastery of the woodcut medium. This work, titled Voor de spiegel, demonstrates his ability to reduce a scene to its essential graphic components. The composition features a woman viewed from behind, adjusting her hair while observing her reflection in a mirror. The artist employs a stark contrast between the dark, solid areas of the figure's skirt and the lighter, textured background.
De Mesquita uses bold, simplified lines to define the form of the corset and the posture of the subject. The reflection in the mirror provides a psychological dimension, capturing the gaze of the woman as she looks back at herself. This focus on the act of self-reflection is a common theme in turn-of-the-century European art, yet de Mesquita approaches it with a distinct stylistic economy. The woodcut technique is evident in the deliberate way the artist carves out the negative space, creating a flat, decorative effect that aligns with the aesthetic principles of the Art Nouveau period.
Rather than attempting a realistic rendering of light and shadow, the artist relies on the interplay of black ink against the paper tone. The vertical lines of the corset and the surrounding architectural elements provide a rhythmic structure to the image. This print reflects the artist's interest in Japanese woodblock prints, which often utilised similar methods of simplification and bold outlines. The result is a balanced, graphic image that prioritises form and pattern over narrative detail. It is a clear example of the artist's technical skill and his contribution to the graphic arts in the Netherlands during the early twentieth century.
