A delicate woodblock print depicting a sparrow and a butterfly among barley stalks, executed in the traditional Japanese kacho-ga style.
This woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi belongs to the kacho-ga tradition, a genre focused on birds and flowers. The composition features a sparrow perched upon a stalk of barley, while a small butterfly hovers nearby. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the soft, muted tones of the paper to act as a neutral background. This technique draws the eye to the subtle gradations of colour on the bird's plumage and the delicate green of the barley heads.
Matsuki Heikichi was a publisher and artist active during the transition into the twentieth century. His work often reflects the technical precision associated with Japanese printmaking of the period. The lines are fine and controlled, capturing the texture of the feathers and the sharp, slender leaves of the grain. The composition is balanced, using the verticality of the barley stalks to create a sense of natural growth within the frame. The negative space is utilised effectively, providing a sense of air and distance that prevents the image from appearing crowded.
In this print, the interaction between the sparrow and the butterfly is captured with a sense of quiet observation. There is no narrative urgency, only the depiction of a fleeting moment in a natural setting. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to layer colours through multiple woodblocks, resulting in the soft transitions visible in the foliage. This piece is a representative example of the aesthetic values prevalent in Japanese print culture at the turn of the century, where the observation of nature remained a primary subject for artistic exploration.
