Eugène Grasset's 'Vitrioleuse (The Acid Thrower)' is a captivating Art Nouveau lithograph from 1894, depicting a mysterious woman with a bowl of acid. This striking print adds dramatic elegance and historical intrigue to any space.

Eugène Grasset's 'Vitrioleuse (The Acid Thrower)' is a striking example of fin-de-siècle poster art, reflecting the anxieties and fascinations of the era. Created in 1894, this lithograph depicts a woman with flowing auburn hair and piercing blue eyes, holding a bowl containing a corrosive substance. The image is framed by a stylised background of orange and cream clouds, typical of the Art Nouveau aesthetic. The term 'vitrioleuse' refers to a woman who throws vitriol (sulphuric acid) as a weapon, a crime that captured the public's imagination during this period. Grasset's portrayal is both alluring and unsettling, embodying the femme fatale archetype that was prevalent in late 19th-century art and literature. As a fine art print, 'Vitrioleuse' brings a touch of dramatic elegance to any interior. Its bold lines, distinctive colour palette, and intriguing subject matter make it a captivating focal point for a living room, study, or hallway. The print's historical context adds depth and sophistication, inviting conversation and contemplation. Whether you are an art history enthusiast or simply appreciate visually striking design, this print offers a unique blend of beauty and intrigue, perfect for adding character to your home.

Eugène Grasset

Eugène Grasset

Eugène Grasset, a Franco-Swiss artist born in 1841, stands as a pivotal figure in the Art Nouveau movement. Though perhaps not as widely recognised as some of his contemporaries, Grasset's influence permeated the era through his diverse output, which included graphic design, poster art, and even furniture design. He brought a unique sense of structure and medievalist sensibility to the flowing lines of Art Nouveau, setting him apart from artists who embraced a more purely floral aesthetic. He died in 1917. Grasset's early training as an ornamental sculptor instilled in him a deep understanding of form and pattern. This foundation informed his later work, most notably his innovative approach to poster design. Unlike many of his contemporaries, who prioritised pure aesthetics, Grasset applied rigorous design principles, carefully considering typography and composition to create visually striking and highly legible posters. His work for the Parisian department store, Le Bon Marché, exemplifies this approach, demonstrating his ability to blend artistic flair with commercial imperatives. Beyond posters, Grasset's contributions extended to book illustration, stained glass, and even typeface design. His 'Grasset' typeface, commissioned by the Peignot foundry, reflects his distinctive style, blending organic forms with a clear, readable structure. Owning a Grasset print means owning a piece of design history, a testament to an artist who bridged the gap between fine art and commercial design during the height of the Art Nouveau era, and whose legacy continues to inspire designers today.
