A 1626 engraving by Claude Mellan portraying Virginia de Vezzo da Velletri, wife of Simon Vouet, featuring the artist's signature single-line shading technique.
This engraving by Claude Mellan depicts Virginia de Vezzo da Velletri, a painter and the wife of the French artist Simon Vouet. Executed in 1626 during Mellan's period in Rome, the work demonstrates his technical mastery of the burin. Mellan is known for his singular approach to shading, often using a single, continuous line that varies in thickness to create volume and form, rather than the traditional cross-hatching methods employed by his contemporaries.
The portrait is presented within an oval frame, which contains an inscription identifying the sitter as a painter. Below the image, a four-line Italian verse praises her artistic skill, suggesting that her true spirit is better captured in her own paintings than in this likeness. The composition is balanced and restrained, characteristic of the classical tendencies within the Roman Baroque circle in which both Mellan and Vouet moved.
Virginia de Vezzo was a notable figure in her own right, active in the Roman art scene before moving to Paris with her husband. This print serves as a record of her appearance and status during their time in Italy. The clarity of the line work and the precise rendering of her features reflect the high level of craftsmanship associated with Mellan's output. The print is a fine example of seventeenth-century portrait engraving, capturing the intersection of personal biography and the professional networks of artists working in Europe at the time.
