A Sienese polyptych panel featuring the Virgin and Child surrounded by saints, rendered in tempera and gold leaf.
This polyptych panel by Ugolino di Nerio represents the Sienese tradition of the early fourteenth century. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, flanked by four saints within individual arched compartments. Above, triangular gables house smaller figures, with a central pinnacle depicting the Crucifixion. The use of gold leaf across the background creates a flat, ethereal space, typical of the period, which directs the viewer's attention to the figures rather than a physical setting.
Ugolino di Nerio, a follower of Duccio, demonstrates a refined approach to tempera painting. The figures exhibit the characteristic Sienese grace, with elongated features and soft, expressive facial modelling. The Virgin's mantle, rendered in deep blue, contrasts with the warm tones of the saints' robes and the gilded surface. The Christ Child reaches towards his mother, a gesture of intimacy that humanises the sacred subject. The architectural framing, with its pointed arches and decorative borders, mimics the structure of larger altarpieces found in Italian churches of the era.
This work is a fine example of the devotional art produced for private or ecclesiastical use. The preservation of the gold leaf and the clarity of the tempera pigments allow for an appreciation of the technical skill involved in such commissions. The figures are arranged with a sense of balance, each occupying their own space while contributing to the unified narrative of the piece. The inclusion of specific saints, identifiable by their attributes, suggests a commission tailored to the needs of a particular patron or religious order. The work remains a clear window into the aesthetic priorities of the Sienese School, where spiritual clarity and decorative beauty were held in high regard.
