A circular Renaissance composition by Luca Signorelli, featuring the Virgin and Child flanked by Saint Jerome and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux.
This tondo, or circular painting, demonstrates the technical precision and anatomical focus characteristic of Luca Signorelli. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who holds the Christ Child in a stable, triangular arrangement. To her left, Saint Jerome is depicted with his traditional weathered, muscular physique, reflecting the artist's interest in the human form. To her right, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux is shown in his monastic habit, his posture and gaze directed toward the central figures with quiet contemplation.
Signorelli employs a clear, structured approach to space. The figures occupy the foreground, while a subtle landscape appears in the distance, providing a sense of depth without distracting from the primary subjects. The drapery of the Virgin's robes and the habit of Saint Bernard are rendered with careful attention to light and shadow, creating a sense of volume. The colour palette remains grounded in earth tones, with the deep red of the Virgin's garment providing a visual anchor for the composition.
As a practitioner of the Tuscan school, Signorelli was known for his ability to integrate classical influence with religious narrative. This work reflects his interest in the physical presence of his subjects, moving away from the more ethereal depictions common in earlier periods. The circular format requires a balanced distribution of weight, which the artist achieves through the placement of the saints on either side of the Virgin. The work remains a clear example of the formal rigour and technical skill associated with the Italian Renaissance, offering a view into the artistic priorities of the late fifteenth century.
