A Renaissance tondo by Luca Signorelli featuring the Virgin and Child alongside the Archangel Michael and other figures.
This circular composition, or tondo, displays the technical mastery of Luca Signorelli, a painter from Cortona who influenced the development of the Italian Renaissance. The work depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, surrounded by a complex arrangement of figures. To the left, the Archangel Michael stands in elaborate armour, holding a pair of scales that weigh a small figure, a reference to the weighing of souls. Beneath him, a demonic figure lies defeated, adding a narrative layer of spiritual conflict to the scene. To the right, a saint holds a model of a city, likely representing a patron or a specific location associated with the commission.
Signorelli is known for his focus on the human form, and this painting demonstrates his ability to render anatomy with precision. The figures possess a sculptural quality, their poses carefully constructed to fit the constraints of the circular frame. The drapery of the Virgin's robes and the heavy folds of the saint's garments show a clear understanding of volume and light. The inclusion of cherub heads at the base of the Virgin's seat provides a transition between the central figures and the ground, maintaining the balance of the composition.
As a practitioner of the Tuscan school, Signorelli prioritised clarity of form and structural integrity. The palette is balanced, using deep blues and warm ochres to guide the viewer's eye across the various symbolic elements. The background features a subtle landscape, which provides a sense of depth without distracting from the primary subjects. This piece reflects the period's interest in combining theological narrative with classical artistic techniques. It remains a representative example of the artist's approach to large-scale religious commissions, where the integration of multiple figures into a unified, harmonious space was the primary objective.
