A classic Venetian School oil painting depicting the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and Saint Jerome in a serene outdoor setting.
Polidoro da Lanciano, a painter active in Venice during the mid-sixteenth century, produced this work in the tradition of the Venetian School. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, accompanied by Saint Jerome, who is shown reading. The figures are arranged in a natural setting, a hallmark of the period's preference for integrating sacred subjects into outdoor environments.
The artist employs a palette characteristic of his contemporaries, using deep reds, blues, and earthy greens to define the drapery of the figures. The Virgin is positioned centrally, her gaze directed towards the child, while Saint Jerome sits to the left, his attention fixed upon an open book. The background features a distant, mountainous view, which provides a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective.
Polidoro da Lanciano was influenced by the work of Titian and Bonifazio de' Pitati. This influence is visible in the soft modelling of the figures and the treatment of the light, which appears to emanate from an unseen source to illuminate the foreground. The painting reflects the devotional requirements of the era, where such works were intended for private contemplation. The tactile quality of the fabric and the careful rendering of the foliage demonstrate the technical proficiency expected of a Venetian painter of this time. The work remains a representative example of the mid-century Venetian style, focusing on harmonious colour relationships and a balanced, calm arrangement of figures within a serene, pastoral environment.
