A devotional panel by Antonio Vivarini, depicting the Virgin Mary enthroned with the Christ Child, rendered in the style of the Venetian Early Renaissance.
This work by Antonio Vivarini displays the stylistic characteristics of the Venetian school during the mid-fifteenth century. The composition features the Virgin Mary seated upon an elaborate, architectural throne, which reflects the Gothic influence still present in Italian art of this period. The Christ Child is positioned on her lap, his form rendered with the soft modelling typical of Vivarini's approach to human anatomy.
The artist employs a balanced colour palette, dominated by the deep green of the Virgin's mantle and the warm, gilded tones of the throne. Two angels are positioned behind the structure, their presence adding to the symmetry of the scene. The decorative elements, particularly the crown worn by the Virgin and the carved details of the throne, demonstrate the attention to surface texture that defined the Vivarini workshop. The painting maintains a sense of stillness, focusing on the devotional interaction between mother and child.
Antonio Vivarini, working alongside his brother-in-law Giovanni d'Alemagna, was a figure in the transition from the International Gothic style to the more structured forms of the Renaissance. This piece captures that shift, combining a traditional iconographic subject with an increasing interest in spatial depth and architectural precision. The use of tempera allows for the clear, precise lines and the luminous quality of the pigments, which remain well-preserved in this composition. The work provides a clear example of the devotional art produced for private or ecclesiastical settings in Venice during the Quattrocento, prioritising clarity of form and symbolic representation over naturalistic movement.
