A seventeenth-century etching by Simon Guillain, depicting a street vendor in Bologna based on a design by Annibale Carracci.
This etching by Simon Guillain, published in 1646, belongs to a series documenting the street life of Bologna. The work is based on drawings by Annibale Carracci, whose studies of the city's itinerant traders provided the foundation for this collection. Guillain, a French sculptor and engraver, translated Carracci's observational sketches into a series of prints that capture the social fabric of the seventeenth-century Italian city.
The composition focuses on a vendor seen from behind, carrying a large barrel strapped to his back. He holds smaller vessels in his hand, while a young child looks up from the lower right, holding a pitcher. The artist employs a system of parallel lines and cross-hatching to define the volume of the barrel and the folds of the vendor's clothing. The technique is precise, relying on the clarity of the etched line to convey texture and form without the need for tonal shading. The background remains largely empty, which directs the viewer's attention to the figures and their interaction.
Such prints were popular among collectors who valued the depiction of everyday life and the character types found in urban centres. By documenting these figures, Guillain and Carracci preserved a record of the trades and costumes of the period. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to replicate the spontaneity of a sketch within the more rigid medium of copperplate engraving. It remains a clear example of the interest in genre subjects that permeated European art during the seventeenth century, moving away from purely religious or mythological themes to observe the reality of the street.
