A precise etching by Maxime Lalanne depicting the coastal town of Villers-sur-Mer, showcasing his mastery of line and atmospheric perspective.
Maxime Lalanne was a master of the etching medium, recognised for his technical precision and his ability to capture the atmospheric qualities of the French coast. This work depicts the seaside town of Villers-sur-Mer in the Calvados department of Normandy. Lalanne employs a delicate, controlled line to define the architecture of the town, which sits along the edge of the promenade. The composition is dominated by a vast, open sky, a characteristic choice that allows the viewer to focus on the quiet interaction between the built environment and the natural expanse of the sea.
The etching demonstrates Lalanne's command over light and shadow. By using fine cross-hatching and varying the pressure of his needle, he creates a sense of depth without relying on heavy tonal blocks. The figures scattered along the beach are rendered with minimal strokes, yet they provide a sense of scale and human presence against the wide horizon. The work reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in coastal topography and the growing popularity of seaside resorts in France.
Lalanne was instrumental in the revival of etching as a fine art form during the nineteenth century. His instructional manual on the subject, published in 1866, influenced many contemporaries. This particular print captures the serene, observational quality that defined his career. The paper retains the original plate marks and the crispness of the initial impression, showing the clarity of his draughtsmanship. It is a study of light, space, and the quiet rhythm of a coastal town, presented with the restraint and technical rigour for which Lalanne is known.
