Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof
A striking woodcut vignette by Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof featuring two symmetrical exotic birds, rendered in a bold, graphic style typical of the Dutch Nieuwe Kunst movement.
Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof was a central figure in the Dutch Nieuwe Kunst movement, a style that paralleled the British Arts and Crafts movement in its focus on decorative arts and the integration of design into everyday life. This woodcut, titled Vignet met twee exotische vogels, demonstrates his mastery of simplified, graphic forms. The composition features two birds mirrored in a symmetrical arrangement, their necks curving to form a heart-like shape. The stark black ink contrasts against the muted green paper, a common technique for the period to achieve a refined, artisanal aesthetic. Dijsselhof often drew inspiration from nature, particularly the flora and fauna of the Dutch East Indies, which he observed during his time at the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam. His approach to woodcut printing prioritised clear outlines and flat planes of colour over realistic shading. This specific vignette reflects the period interest in stylised, ornamental motifs suitable for book illustrations, ex-libris plates, or decorative borders. The cross-hatched patterns on the wings provide a subtle texture that balances the bold, solid areas of the birds' bodies. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Dijsselhof created an image that functions as a cohesive graphic symbol rather than a literal representation of the animals. This work is representative of the Dutch transition towards modern graphic design at the turn of the twentieth century, where the focus shifted towards the harmony between the printed image and the page layout.
