The View of Venice, published in 1500, is a monumental achievement in early modern cartography. Commissioned by the German merchant Anton Kolb and designed by Jacopo de' Barbari, this woodcut consists of six large blocks joined to form a singular, expansive perspective of the city. It represents a shift in how urban spaces were documented, moving away from symbolic or schematic representations toward a bird's-eye view that prioritises geographical accuracy and architectural detail.

The composition captures the city from an elevated vantage point, allowing the viewer to observe the layout of the canals, the density of the housing, and the placement of major religious and civic buildings. The level of precision is remarkable for the period, as it documents the city's structure with a degree of fidelity that remains useful to historians today. The print includes allegorical figures in the clouds, such as Mercury and Neptune, which reflect the contemporary belief in Venice as a city protected by the gods and a maritime power of immense reach.
