A 1777 topographical aquatint by Paul Sandby, documenting a scenic view of the River Dee in North Wales with the distant Cader Idris mountain.
This aquatint by Paul Sandby depicts a specific stretch of the River Dee in North Wales. Published in 1777, the work captures the topographical interest in the British countryside that defined the period. Sandby, often called the father of English watercolour, utilised the aquatint process to replicate the tonal qualities of his wash drawings. The composition follows a classical arrangement, with the river leading the eye towards the distant silhouette of Cader Idris.
In the foreground, figures with horses and a dog provide a sense of scale and human presence within the rugged terrain. The treatment of the foliage and the rocky banks demonstrates the artist's technical precision in etching. The soft, sepia-toned ink application creates a unified atmosphere, typical of the prints produced for the gentleman traveller or the collector of topographical views.
Sandby was instrumental in popularising the depiction of Welsh scenery, which became a fashionable subject for artists and tourists alike during the late eighteenth century. This print belongs to a series documenting his travels through the region. The inclusion of the exact distance to Bala and Dolgelli reflects the era's preoccupation with cartographic accuracy and the systematic exploration of the British Isles. The work remains a clear example of the intersection between artistic observation and the scientific documentation of geography during the Enlightenment.
