Thomas Girtin
A detailed aquatint by Thomas Girtin capturing the architectural character of the Pont au Change and the Conciergerie in Paris, circa 1802.
This print originates from the series 'A Selection of Twenty of the Most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs', published posthumously in 1803. Thomas Girtin visited Paris in 1801, shortly before his early death, and produced a series of sketches that captured the city with a distinct atmospheric quality. This specific view depicts the Pont au Change, with the Conciergerie and the surrounding architecture of the Île de la Cité rendered in soft, muted tones. Girtin utilised a combination of soft-ground etching and aquatint to achieve the tonal depth seen here. The technique allows for a painterly effect, mimicking the appearance of a watercolour wash. The composition focuses on the architectural geometry of the bridge and the buildings along the Seine, balanced by the expansive, cloud-filled sky. The inclusion of small figures and boats provides a sense of scale, grounding the urban scene in daily activity. Unlike the more rigid topographical drawings of the period, Girtin prioritised the play of light across the stone surfaces and the reflection of the structures in the water. This work reflects the artist's interest in the changing urban environment of Paris at the turn of the nineteenth century. The print demonstrates his ability to translate complex architectural forms into a cohesive visual narrative. The soft lines and controlled palette create a sense of quiet observation, typical of his later output. As a record of Parisian architecture, the print offers a view of the city before the extensive renovations of the mid-nineteenth century, preserving the character of the older districts along the riverbank.
