A study of the Italian countryside, capturing the atmospheric light and rugged terrain near Civita Castellana with direct, expressive brushwork.
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot painted this work during his first visit to Italy between 1825 and 1828. It captures the region surrounding Civita Castellana, a site frequently visited by artists of the period for its rugged terrain and historical associations. Corot worked directly from nature, a practice that allowed him to observe the specific qualities of light and atmosphere unique to the Italian countryside.
The composition is structured through a series of receding planes. In the foreground, the earth is rendered with direct, confident brushwork, suggesting the texture of the rocky terrain. The middle ground transitions into a flatter, more muted expanse of green, leading the eye toward the distant, hazy silhouette of Mount Soracte. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, filled with heavy, grey-blue clouds that break to reveal patches of pale light. This treatment of the sky demonstrates Corot's interest in capturing transient meteorological conditions rather than static, idealised forms.
Unlike the highly finished studio compositions of his contemporaries, this painting retains the immediacy of a study. The paint application is varied, ranging from thin washes in the sky to thicker, more tactile marks in the foreground foliage. The palette is dominated by earthy greens, ochres, and cool greys, reflecting the natural colours of the Roman Campagna. By focusing on the interplay between the solid mass of the mountain and the shifting clouds, Corot creates a sense of spatial depth that feels both grounded and expansive. This work provides insight into the artist's early development, showing his transition from the rigid training of the French Academy toward the more personal, observational style that would define his later career.
