The composition captures the town from the south, across the Schie canal. The scene is defined by a low horizon line, which allows the expansive, cloud-filled sky to occupy the upper two-thirds of the canvas. Vermeer employs a sophisticated use of light and shadow, particularly in the way the sunlight strikes the buildings, creating a sense of calm and stillness.

The architecture is rendered with precision, showing the Schiedam Gate and the Rotterdam Gate, which were significant structures in the seventeenth century. The water in the foreground acts as a mirror, reflecting the city walls and the moored vessels.
