A study of the Italian countryside near Tivoli, rendered in graphite and wash by French artist Jean Achille Benouville.
This drawing by Jean Achille Benouville captures the Italian countryside near Tivoli, a location frequently visited by French artists during the nineteenth century. Benouville, a recipient of the Prix de Rome, spent significant time in Italy, where he produced numerous studies of the terrain. His approach to this work demonstrates a focus on the structural elements of the trees and the subtle variations in light across the open ground.
The composition is balanced, with the dense foliage of the central trees providing a vertical anchor against the rolling hills in the distance. Benouville uses wash to define the shadows and depth, while the graphite lines delineate the forms of the branches and the rocky foreground. The inclusion of a small figure near the water adds a sense of scale to the scene, grounding the viewer in the physical reality of the location. The artist's technique reflects the training of the period, which prioritised careful observation and the translation of natural forms into a coherent visual structure.
This piece is an example of the plein-air tradition that informed the work of many French painters of the era. By working directly from the subject, Benouville achieved a sense of immediacy in his depiction of the light and atmosphere. The muted palette, achieved through the use of sepia or brown wash, emphasises the textures of the earth and the foliage. The work remains a clear record of the artist's engagement with the Italian environment, providing a view into the methods used by nineteenth-century artists to document their travels and refine their skills in composition and tonal control.
