The painting depicts the Victorian countryside with a focus on the specific topography between Ballarat and Creswick Creek. Von Guerard was trained in the European tradition of the Düsseldorf School, which prioritised precise observation and a meticulous approach to natural detail. This background is evident in the careful rendering of the eucalyptus trees, the rocky outcrops, and the play of light across the creek.
