A detailed 1769 etching by Cornelis van Noorde documenting four Dutch whaling ships trapped in Arctic ice, complete with polar bears and period-accurate rigging.
This etching by Cornelis van Noorde documents a specific maritime event from 1769, when four Dutch whaling vessels became trapped in the ice off the coast of Greenland. The composition captures the precarious situation of the ships, which remained icebound from 8 July until 21 November of that year. Van Noorde, a Haarlem-based artist known for his portraiture and topographical prints, employs a precise, linear style typical of eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking to record the scene.
The foreground features ice floes populated by polar bears and a walrus, elements that provide a sense of the harsh Arctic environment. The ships, depicted with their masts and rigging intact, are clustered together, surrounded by the frozen expanse. The artist uses fine cross-hatching to define the texture of the ice and the turbulent sky, while the ships themselves are rendered with technical accuracy regarding their construction. The inclusion of a descriptive caption at the bottom of the plate, written in Dutch, confirms the historical nature of the work, serving as a visual record of the dangers faced by the Dutch whaling fleet during the period.
Van Noorde’s work reflects the contemporary interest in exploration and the documentation of distant, often perilous, regions. The print is not merely an artistic exercise but a reportage of a survival story. The contrast between the rigid, man-made structures of the ships and the organic, jagged forms of the ice floes creates a narrative of human vulnerability against the natural world. This piece offers a glimpse into the maritime history of the Netherlands, where the whaling industry was a significant, albeit hazardous, economic activity. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition make this an informative example of historical printmaking from the late eighteenth century.
