A refined sixteenth-century engraving by Giorgio Ghisi depicting a winged allegorical figure of Victory resting her hand upon a sphere.
Giorgio Ghisi, a master engraver from Mantua, produced this work during the height of the Italian Mannerist period. The composition features a winged female figure, personifying Victory, standing within a shallow, architectural niche. She rests one hand upon a large, smooth sphere, a common iconographic element in Renaissance art representing the world or fortune. Her posture is contrapposto, a hallmark of the era, which creates a sense of fluid movement despite the static nature of the engraving.
Ghisi demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques. These lines define the musculature of the figure and the soft, cascading folds of her drapery. The background is rendered with dense, horizontal lines, which push the figure forward and create a clear sense of spatial depth. The light source appears to come from the upper left, casting subtle shadows that model the form of the figure and the curvature of the sphere.
This print reflects the broader interest in classical antiquity and humanistic allegory that defined the sixteenth-century Italian art world. Ghisi was known for his ability to translate the complex compositions of painters into the medium of engraving, often working after designs by artists such as Giulio Romano. This particular work displays the refined, elongated proportions and the sophisticated, intellectualised approach to subject matter that characterise the Mannerist style. The precision of the line work and the balanced composition demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship expected of a professional printmaker in the mid-sixteenth century. It remains a clear example of the period's focus on anatomical study and the integration of classical symbolism into contemporary visual culture.
